A cup can be built from seamed panels and interlining, or pressed into shape by a hot tool. The two methods feel different on the body from the first hour, and age in opposite directions.
Two bras can look identical on a hanger and be built on entirely opposite principles. One has its shape sewn into it — panels of tulle and stable cloth joined along curved seams that were drafted to produce a specific volume. The other has its shape pressed into it — a flat disc of fabric laid over a heated tool until it takes and keeps a dome. Both are legitimate. They are simply different bargains, and it is worth knowing which one you are making.
What an interlined tulle cup actually is
A seamed cup begins as flat pattern pieces, usually three. Between the face fabric and the lining sits an interlining — most often a fine, firm tulle or a light non-stretch mesh — cut on a specified grain and basted into place before the panels are joined. The tulle contributes no visible texture and almost no weight. What it contributes is memory. It gives the silk or lace above it something to hold onto, so the cup keeps the curve the patternmaker drafted rather than slowly relaxing into whatever the wearer's body suggests.
The seams themselves do the shaping. A cup seam is not a straight line joining two straight edges; it is a pair of opposing curves, one slightly longer than the other, so that when they are eased together the flat cloth is forced out of plane. This is the same principle by which a sail holds wind. Get the differential right and the cup rises smoothly. Get it wrong by two millimetres and you produce either a crease at the apex or a hollow above it.
What a moulded cup actually is
A moulded cup skips geometry entirely. A circle of foam-backed or bonded fabric is placed over a heated aluminium form and held under pressure for a matter of seconds. The fibres and the bonding layer deform and then set, and the cup emerges already three-dimensional, with no seams anywhere on its surface. This is why moulded cups vanish under a thin jersey dress: there is literally nothing to print through.

How they age
Here the two paths separate decisively. A seamed cup ages the way a well-made garment ages: the fabric softens, the shape holds, and if a seam gives it can be reopened and restitched. A moulded cup ages the way a technical component ages: the bonded layer is a polymer, and polymers fatigue. Heat accelerates this — which is why a moulded bra that has spent two summers in a tumble dryer will have gone slightly soft-edged and lost the crispness it had in the shop, while nothing visible is torn.

- Moulded — invisible under close-fitting cloth, consistent from unit to unit, faster to produce, and finished as soon as the bonding layer tires.
- Seamed cups suit fuller busts, where projection must be placed precisely rather than averaged.
- Moulded cups suit a smooth line under thin knitwear, and shallower shapes where less volume must be directed.
- A hybrid exists — a moulded lower with a stretch lace upper — and it inherits the weaknesses of both if built carelessly.
Why we build the way we build
The house works seamed and interlined for almost everything. It is not nostalgia. A seamed cup lets us place fullness where a particular body needs it, and lets us change our minds in a fitting without starting again. It also lets us use silk and French lace as the face fabric — materials that cannot survive a moulding press, because heat and pressure would flatten the very hand that makes them worth using. The three-panel cup is the only construction that lets Chantilly lace remain Chantilly lace and still hold a shape.
The honest test in a fitting room
Press the empty cup gently between thumb and finger and let go. An interlined cup will spring back and hold an open, self-supporting curve; you will feel the tulle resist you. A moulded cup will dent and recover more slowly, with the soft, rubbery return of foam. Neither reaction is a verdict. But once you can tell the two apart by touch, you will understand exactly why one piece costs what it costs, and why the other will be a different garment in eighteen months than it was on the first night.
