Lingerie is worn closer, and washed more often, than anything else you own. These are the rituals that keep it alive.
Hand-wash in cool water with a pH-neutral soap — never ordinary detergent, whose enzymes are designed to digest protein, and silk is protein. Roll in a white cotton towel to draw the water out, then dry flat in the shade. Steam to release creases; never iron directly.
Wash by hand in a mesh bag, with every hook fastened so nothing snags the ground. Never wring. Steam from a distance — a hot plate flattens the gimp and the relief never comes back.
Heat is what kills a band: no dryer, no radiator, no hot car. Rotate your pieces rather than wearing the same one two days running — elastic needs a day to recover, and that alone roughly doubles its life.
Hook-and-eye tape, straps and sliders are all replaceable, and a wire can be re-cased. Write to the atelier before you retire a piece — a good repairer is a more valuable relationship than a good dry cleaner.
