Grading a cup is not scaling it. Why a 30E and a 36E share a volume but not a shape, what sister sizing really means, and where mathematical grading stops working.
A single pattern must eventually become a run of sizes, and the process that gets it there is called grading. In most categories grading is a well-behaved procedure — a set of increments applied at defined points, the shape growing outward in an orderly way. In lingerie it is neither well-behaved nor simple, because the thing being graded is a volume attached to a frame, and the two do not grow together.
Why scaling does not work
The first instinct — enlarge the whole pattern by a percentage — fails immediately, and it fails in a way worth understanding. Bodies do not scale isotropically. Between a smaller size and a larger one, circumference grows a great deal, back width grows moderately, and shoulder-to-bust length grows very little. Photographic enlargement grows all three equally, which produces a garment that is correct at the bust and wrong everywhere vertically. This is exactly what causes a strap that is far too long on a large size of a cheaply graded style: the vertical measurements were inflated along with the horizontal ones.
Proper grading is therefore differential. A set of grade rules assigns each cardinal point on the pattern its own movement in x and y, derived from anthropometric data rather than from arithmetic. The pattern grows unevenly, which is the point.
The two axes of a bra size
A bra label carries two independent variables, and confusing them is the single most common error in the whole category. The number is the band — the circumference of the ribcage — and it grades in a straightforward, largely horizontal way. The letter is the cup, and it does not describe a volume at all. It describes a difference between bust and underbust measurement. This is why a cup letter means something different at every band size: the cup on a 30D and the cup on a 38D are the same difference measured on very different frames, and they hold materially different volumes.

Sister sizing, correctly explained
It follows from the above that cup volume is approximately preserved when you move one band size down and one cup letter up, or one band up and one letter down. A 34D, a 32DD and a 36C hold roughly the same volume on differently sized frames. These are sister sizes, and knowing them is the most immediately useful piece of technical knowledge a woman can carry into a fitting room. When a band rides up but the cups fit, you do not need a different cup volume — you need the same volume on a smaller frame, which means going down a band and up a letter.
- Band circumference grades horizontally, in even increments, and is the simplest part of the run.
- Cup depth and width grade together but not proportionally; depth grows faster than width in the larger letters.
- Wire width must be re-specified at intervals through the run — it cannot be graded continuously, because wires exist in discrete sizes.
- Strap placement moves outward with back width, not with cup volume; grading them together is why straps slide on larger sizes.
- Vertical measurements grow far less than horizontal ones, and grading them equally ruins the fit of every size but the base.
Where the mathematics stops
Grade rules are reliable over a short distance from the base size and progressively less reliable the further you travel. Two or three sizes out, a mathematically graded cup begins to diverge from a fitted one — the apex sits wrong, the wire is too shallow for the root it must now contain, the upper cup gapes. Serious houses solve this with multiple base sizes: a separate, individually fitted block for the small end of the run, another for the middle, another for the full-bust end, each graded only a short way in either direction. It is three times the pattern work, and it is the only honest way to make a wide size run that actually fits at both ends.
What this means in a drawer
Two practical conclusions. First, a woman who has always been one size is quite possibly wearing a band too large and a cup too small, which is the most common misfit in the category and the easiest to correct with a sister size. Second, judge a house by the extremes of its range rather than by the middle. Anyone can fit the base size — that is where the block was built. Whether the smallest and the largest pieces in the run also fit tells you exactly how many blocks were made, and therefore how seriously the question was taken.
