How Couture Came to the Body: A Short History of the Made-to-Measure Underlayer

Corsetière, bustier-maker, lingère. The made-to-measure underlayer is older than couture itself — and every couture technique that matters was invented on it first.

The conventional history of haute couture begins in Paris in the 1850s with a designer presenting finished garments on live models and signing his work like a painter. It is a good story, and it describes the birth of fashion as a business. It does not describe the birth of the techniques. Those were already old, and almost all of them had been developed on the layer nobody saw.

For several centuries before couture had a name, the most technically demanding garment-making in Europe was corsetry and the making of body linen — work done to individual measure, by specialist trades, on the layer against the skin. The corsetière and the lingère were not adjacent to high dressmaking. They were the precondition for it. No gown of the period held its shape without the structure built underneath it, and the structure was where the engineering lived.

The trades, and what each one knew

The division of labour was strict and jealously guarded. The corsetière worked in coutil — a densely woven, low-stretch cotton twill designed specifically to resist deformation under sustained tension — setting bone channels, inserting whalebone or later steel, and shaping panels so that a flat cloth could hold a three-dimensional body under load without collapsing. This is structural engineering carried out with a needle, and the language survives: we still speak of a bone, a channel, a panel, a gusset.

The lingère worked at the opposite extreme, in the finest linen and cotton lawn, on garments that touched the skin directly. Her skills were seam finishing, the rolled hem, the whipped edge, the insertion of lace by hand, and the flat-felled and French seams that made an internal edge disappear entirely. Because these garments were laundered violently and often, everything had to be sealed — a raw edge simply would not survive. Necessity produced the finest seam finishes in the craft.

Between them, these two trades held the entire vocabulary that couture would later claim: shaping through seams rather than through fastening, structure hidden inside a garment, edges that cannot fray, and above all the practice of building to one measured body.

The gusset, and why it deserves a paragraph

One invention illustrates the level of thinking involved. A gusset is a small triangular or diamond-shaped piece inserted where a garment must expand in one direction only — historically at the bust of a shift, at the underarm, at the hip. It solves a problem that cannot be solved by cutting a larger piece: it introduces volume at a precise point without adding it anywhere else, and it does so while keeping the surrounding cloth on the straight grain, so the garment does not distort.

This is a genuinely sophisticated piece of geometry, and it was in routine use in body linen long before anyone described dressmaking as an art. Its direct descendant is the bust dart, and its descendant in our own work is the cup seam — which does exactly the same job, converting flat cloth into a specific volume at a specific place.

  • Coutil: a dense, low-stretch cotton twill developed specifically to hold shape under sustained tension.
  • Bone channels: separate casings that carry the structural element without stressing the fashion fabric.
  • The gusset: volume introduced at one point without disturbing the grain around it — ancestor of the dart and the cup seam.
  • Flat-felled and French seams: raw edges enclosed entirely, born of laundering, retained for comfort.
  • Measured, individual fitting — the defining practice of couture, and older in body linen than in dress.

What changed in the twentieth century

The corset gave way, over roughly three decades, to the brassiere — a shift from compressing the torso into a shape to suspending the breasts from a band and straps. This was a real conceptual change and not merely a change of taste: the corset worked in compression, the bra works in tension. Almost everything about the modern garment follows from that. Load moves horizontally around the ribcage. Straps stabilise rather than carry. Wires locate the structure at the breast root rather than encasing the whole torso.

What did not change was the technique. Cup seams inherited the logic of the gusset. The band inherited the coutil principle — a low-stretch structural element separate from the decorative one. The bone channel became the wire casing. And the lingère's obsession with an enclosed edge became the reason a well-made bra has no raw seam anywhere against skin.

Where the standard survives

Made-to-measure lingerie is the direct continuation of this line, and it is the last place in the trade where the old logic is still applied end to end: measure a specific body, build a toile, correct it on her, and only then cut. The techniques are not preserved out of nostalgia. They are preserved because nobody has invented anything better for the problem, and because industrial production discarded them for reasons of cost rather than of function.

Every technique the gown is admired for was worked out first on the layer nobody was going to see.

Our own bench in Bangkok inherits this without much ceremony. The coutil in a corselette band, the boning channel that carries the spiral steel without stressing the silk beside it, the French seam that leaves the inside as clean as the outside — these are not references to history. They are simply the correct answers, arrived at by people who had to solve the same problems with fewer machines, and never improved upon since.
