Bodies change and commercial sizing lies. Of all the garments a woman owns, the one against her skin is the one where being measured properly changes most.
Made-to-measure is usually presented as the top of a luxury pyramid: the most expensive way to buy the most visible garment. We would make a different case. Of all the things a person can have made to their own measure, lingerie is where the practice earns its cost most clearly — and it does so for reasons that have nothing to do with luxury and everything to do with how bodies actually behave.
The first reason: the tolerances are brutal
A coat has generous tolerances. It hangs from the shoulders, it has ease built in everywhere, and a centimetre in most directions is invisible. A bra has almost none. The wire must sit behind the breast tissue all the way around its root; three millimetres too narrow and it rides onto tissue, three millimetres too wide and it lands in the underarm. The apex of the cup must meet the fullest point of the breast; five millimetres out and the top edge either gaps or cuts.
In no other garment does a three-millimetre error produce pain. This alone would make the case: where tolerances are that tight, an approximation derived from two measurements is not a reasonable engineering approach.
The second reason: sizing describes almost nothing
Commercial lingerie sizing captures two dimensions — underbust circumference and the bust-to-underbust difference — of an object that varies along at least six. It says nothing about the width of the breast root across the chest wall, which varies by several centimetres within a single nominal size. Nothing about projection, or whether the volume sits high or low. Nothing about the cross-section of the ribcage, which ranges from nearly circular to markedly flat and determines whether a wire lies against the body or bridges away from it. Nothing about shoulder slope, which decides whether a strap stays where it is put.
The consequence is familiar to almost every woman: two garments with the same label, one of which fits and one of which does not, and a private conclusion that the problem lies with her body. It does not. It lies with a system that describes an object in two numbers and then acts as though those two numbers were sufficient.
The third reason: the body will not hold still
This is the reason we consider decisive. A body varies across a day, across a month, and across years, and the amounts are not small. The ribcage changes circumference with the breath and across a cycle. Breast volume commonly moves by a full cup size within a single month. Pregnancy, feeding, weight change, surgery and time move it further and often permanently.
Made-to-measure is often assumed to be the most rigid answer — a garment locked to one exact moment of one exact body. Built properly, it is the opposite. Because the maker knows which dimensions are fixed for a particular woman and which are variable, the garment can be engineered to hold the fixed ones exactly and give in the variable ones. Ribcage cross-section barely changes; that is cut to the millimetre. Volume changes monthly; that is where a stretch upper cup section, a four-position hook tape and a wider band elastic range are specified. A generic garment cannot make this distinction because it does not know which is which.

- Two numbers cannot describe root width, projection, tissue distribution, ribcage shape, shoulder slope or asymmetry.
- Most women are asymmetrical; made-to-measure simply cuts two different cups.
- Knowing which dimensions are fixed and which vary lets the maker hold one exactly and give in the other.
- A corrected pattern is reusable for years — the second and third pieces need no fittings at all.
The fourth reason: the pattern outlives the garment
A made-to-measure coat produces a coat. A made-to-measure bra produces a corrected pattern that remains valid for years. Once a woman's pattern exists, a second piece in another cloth requires no fittings; a third, none. When her body changes, the pattern is revised rather than rebuilt — an adjustment to volume, a new wire, a band re-cut — which is a fraction of the original work.
This changes the economics entirely, and it is the part most people miss. The cost of made-to-measure is concentrated almost wholly in the first piece, because the first piece includes the fitting process. Amortised across a decade of garments made from the same evolving pattern, it stops looking like a luxury and starts looking like the sensible way to solve a recurring problem once.
What it does not do
It does not eliminate the need for judgement. A pattern can be dimensionally perfect and still be the wrong style for a body — a full-cup shape on someone who needs a balconette, a firm cradle where a softer one would suit. Measurement gets you the geometry; the fitter's eye decides the architecture, and that is a matter of experience rather than arithmetic.
It also does not remove the need for care. A made-to-measure silk piece washed in hot water with an alkaline detergent will be damaged exactly as fast as any other. The pattern is precise; the fibre is still a protein.

Who should actually do it
We would not tell everyone to. If a body sits close to the population median and well-made ready-to-wear fits without complaint, there is no argument for spending more. Made-to-measure earns its cost when the tolerance runs out: a very narrow or very wide root, an unusually shallow or deep ribcage, marked asymmetry, a body after surgery, or simply a woman who has spent twenty years never once finding a piece that did not need adjusting.
For her, the alternative is not a slightly less perfect garment. It is a lifetime of small daily discomforts she has been taught to accept as ordinary — and the point of measuring properly is not luxury at all. It is that the discomfort was never necessary in the first place.
